The other major Japanese festival I attend every year is the Daikin festival, sponsored by Daikin Industries. Held every year on the Friday before memorial at the Decatur, Al fairgrounds, the festival is inspired by Obon festivals in Japan. Dancing, games, free food, and hot air balloon rides make it lots of fun!

King’s Cake

Mardi gras, fat tuesday, pancake day. Call it what you will, but the day before lent begins is one last farewell to the winter holidays. Originally the day to eat up the last of the dairy and eggs from the year before, now it just means I ate to much breakfast food for dinner. And it’s the last time King’s cake (served between King’s day and today) is traditionally baked. The last cake often holds a small token; whoever gets the slice with it gets to hold the party next year!

Christmas Lucia Buns

Lucia Buns
So, after the whole Saint Nicholas visit, the next tradition we have is the visit of Saint Lucy. No, we’re not Swedish, but it’s still so much fun. The youngest girl in our house dresses in a white gown, and wears a wreath of greenery in her hair. Maggie is old enough to carry the tray now, so it’s her turn^^
